What can the pain team do?

The clinicians in the Hills Integrated Pain Team work with people who are struggling with persistent or “chronic” pain, as well as emotional difficulties that can accompany pain.

Persistent pain is a complex experience that affects many aspects of life: work and leisure activities, relationships, emotions and coping.

Often people feel confused and worried by pain that continues for weeks or months, and may find that life starts to become dominated by pain.

The Hills Integrated Pain Team recognises that the best treatment for chronic pain addresses all parts of the pain experience. Each person’s pain is unique, and all pain is real.

We invite people to learn new ways to manage both the physical aspects of their pain and the ways it impacts on their lives.

FAQ

What treatments do we provide?

Clinicians in the Hills Integrated Pain Team provide evidence-based treatments drawn from the most recent findings in pain science. These include a combination of physical techniques and cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT).

We work as a team so that you, the person with pain, does not “fall through the cracks.” Both the physiotherapist and psychologist are there with you in the room together, so that you don’t have to tell your story again and again.

With you, we develop a treatment plan that incorporates both physical and psychological strategies to help you get your life back on track.

But what does that really mean for you?

It means we will listen to your story, and in collaboration with you, plan out a range of activities that can help you with your pain and its consequences.

These focus on both the mind and body, and include:

  • education about what happens in the mind and body when we have pain
  • movements, exercises, or stretches to do at home
  • visualisation tasks (things you picture “in your mind’s eye” or on picture cards)
  • ways to examine and manage your thoughts and feelings about pain
  • adjustments to the ways you approach your everyday activities
  • The focus of our service is self-management: helping you to develop the skills you need to manage your own pain into the future.
