What Is An Exercise Physiologist?
An Exercise Physiologist is a university trained allied health professional who has undergone extensive medical training and education to understand the reasons, causes and treatment of chronic conditions. The chronic conditions we are trained in vary extensively.
Musculo-skeletal issues we our trained in include osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, joint replacements, bursitis, postural re-training and joint surgery.
Cardiovascular diseases we can help to improve include myocardial infarction, heart failure, hypertension, elevated cholesterol and pre/post surgery conditioning (CABG).
Metabolic conditions we are educated in treating include diabetes (Type 1 and 2), obesity, weight management, central adiposity and muscle wasting.
Neuromuscular diseases we are trained to help treat include stroke, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy (ALS).
Respiratory diseases we can help to improve include asthma, COPD and non-specific shortness of breath, especially with exertion.
We can also help to improve cancer related fatigue and conditioning while you undertake chemo/radiation treatment.
It has also be proven that a regular exercise regime throughout the week has positively affected mental health diseases such as depression, anxiety and stress.
We also help those with chronic conditions which may not be mentioned, but are affecting your daily activities, or causing you undue stress.
There are a number of factors that can contribute to chronic disease, with many being factors we can’t control such as genetics and age. However, the highest risk of obtaining a chronic condition is the presence of one or more other chronic conditions. Along with deteriorating your health and increasing the risk of stroke and heart disease, the increased cost of further medications and specialist appointments can be debilitating for some.
Exercise can aid the treatment of your chronic condition. Most of the effects of medications taken to aid chronic conditions can be achieved by completing a structured, appropriately prescribed exercise program which is completed a few times per week.
Exercise Physiologists are not personal trainers. We do not push people past their limitations and only prescribe exercises that will be suitable and appropriate to complete, based on your physical health right now. All of our prescription is backed up by proven facts and scientific evidence. Exercise Physiologists are also trained to help those persons with multiple conditions or diseases.
So please don’t be put off if you’re thinking, ‘my health has deteriorated too much to change’, or ‘I’m too old to exercise’. Our guarantee is that we will be able to get you moving in the right direction, towards your goals and improving your well-being and quality of life.
Why Should I See An Exercise Physiologist?
Throughout our four year university degree, we learn about the body’s anatomy and physiology in great detail. We use scientific, evidence based practices to give you appropriate exercises that are specific for each individual based on the condition, injury or disease they may have. We have extensive knowledge surrounding the body’s response to exercise. We use this knowledge to prescribe the best physical activity plan for you based on your fitness levels now, your schedule throughout the week and your goals.
Here at myPhysioSA, we have a specialised, private rehabilitation gym that is away from prying eyes. Everyone has their own individualised program based on their wants, needs and conditions, and it is a social space for like minded people to improve at their own pace.
What can I expect from my appointment?
The first appointment will mainly be a sit down chat about your current medical history and what issue is causing you the most concern. We will then talk about your goals, wants and needs. we then discuss together how we will move forward and put an exercise program into place that will aim to achieve your goals and improve your general health and well-being.
At this appointment, you will be asked to complete some very basic movements to assess your health and fitness levels. If you feel uncomfortable or are asked to complete something you are not capable of, please let us know. This will give us information about what movements may best be appropriate for you.
By the end of the appointment you will have a clear plan moving forward on how we will target your goals and aim to improve your health. We can do this through home exercise programs, group classes or 1 on 1 sessions. Everything discussed will have the same focus, and that is to improve your health in any way you feel necessary.
As mentioned we will discuss any future appointments in your first appointment. However please be aware that exercise is most effective when completed consistently a few times per week. Future appointments will focus on the exercises you will complete in your program (1 on 1, group or home). We will also ask you to complete some homework which will make sure we can focus on specific exercises in our supervised session.
We will work in collaboration with any other health professional you may be seeing to manage your conditions. We believe that a multi-disciplinary approach yields the best results for your health, and this works best with everyone on the same page. If you have a musculo-skeletal issue that is outside our expertise, we work very closely with our highly trained, professional physiotherapists available that can help with treatment also.
Book in to one of our Exercise Physiologist Adelaide clinics to take the first step in improving your health, and ask about our group classes to help keep you on track to reach your goals.
How can Exercise Physiologist Adelaide help me?
So what is the point of exercise? And how much do I have to do?
The benefits of exercise have been studied and reported on extensively. Along with medication, exercise has been proven to be very effective at maintaining and improving the symptoms of chronic conditions.
Exercise facilitates changes within the body that increases its efficiency. This enables us to complete more activities and manage conditions or disease that may cause our bodies to function differently.
This will improve the efficiency of different organs and processes within our bodies (cardiovascular, muscular and respiratory systems). We are able to enhance mobility and function throughout every day life and reduce the risk of other co-morbidities associated with chronic conditions.
So what is the point of exercise? And how much do I have to do?
The point of completing an exercise regime is to make your life easier and better. Are you are struggling to get out of a chair, finding you are getting out of breath on small tasks or are even finding it harder to lift the laundry basket off the floor? These are all aspects of our daily activities that a structured exercise can improve.
Now the improvements of exercise are based largely on the amount and the type of exercise you complete. The WHO (World Health Organisation) recommend that everyone completes 5 x 30 mins sessions of exercise weekly.
For some this is a small amount, for others, it may seem like an insurmountable task.
So if you have any further questions, or would like to book into one of our Exercise Physiologist Adelaide clinics, give myPhysioSA a call today.
